THE FIRST DISTILLERY IN ITALY
Be surprised by the bicentennial history of a Family whose name, through centuries and generations, has become synonymous with a product, an icon of an entire Nation.
Pushing as far as Bassano del Grappa, Bortolo Nardini was the victim of an accident that forced him to stop in the city. During his convalescence, he had the opportunity to learn more about Bassano and to understand its strategic importance as a commercial crossroads between Valsugana and Venice. With a clear vision and a tenacious will to turn it into reality, he bought the Osteria al Ponte, now "Grapperia Nardini," to produce grappa with a still on a permanent basis and resell it. For the first time, it was no longer the distiller, with his mobile still, who went to the peasants to distill but the peasants themselves who gave him the pomace to make grappa. Bortolo calls his grappa "Aquavite di vinaccia," in the Latin manner without the "c," playing on the etymology that calls it sometimes "aqua di vita" and sometimes "aqua della vite." Italy's first grappa, Grappa Nardini, was born.
Since 1779, Nardini has always been a family-run business, joining the exclusive club of bicentennial family businesses, "Les Henokiens." A life dedicated to enhancing its territory, the cradle of a precious product even today, after more than two centuries. Today it is the 7th generation that carries on the family tradition and spreads the culture of an Italian icon around the world: Grappa Nardini.
