It was created in France in the hermitage on the Gier River in 1857 by the Marist friar Emmanuel in order to treat his brethren. Later it was also used by the French government to treat soldiers at the front (hence the name "Arquebuse"). In the early 1900s the Marist friars settled in Carmagnola (Turin), where they are currently based. All of the beneficial properties of the 34 herbs, such as thyme, lavender, tanacetus, fennel, hypericum perforatum, mentha piperita, ocimum basilicum, angelica silvestris, salvia officinalis, anthemis nobilis and others, that have made Alpestre famous over time, have been gathered in the formula.
