Novacella is the northernmost wine region in Italy. The magnificent vineyards on the sunniest slopes surrounding the abbey for eight centuries have produced white grapes that are vinified in the abbey's cellars. The monastery also owns the Marklhof vineyard in Cornaiano, on the "wine road" near Bolzano, South Tyrol's main wine region.
The dry, sandy soils and breezy climate of these hills produce excellent rosso wines such as the distinctive Lago di caldaro, fine Schiave wines, and elegant Pinot Noirs. Novacella's third vineyard is located around the old and small Monastery of Santa Maria in Bolzano. Here, in the secco and very warm climate of the valley floor, the full-bodied, dark-colored Lagrein ripens, making it particularly suitable for aging. In the cellars of Abbazia di novacella, the grapes from these three vineyards are transformed into wine whose unique characteristics and qualities have been rewarded with the loyalty of generations of friends and connoisseurs.
The ancient vineyards in this area are kerner and Grüner Veltliner, white grape varieties with a citrusy and spicy bouquet that harvest from the soil precious minerals donated by the nearby mountains of the Dolomites.
