When technique and science were not enough in the past, old farmers had no choice but to hope for magic; in fact, the Langa is full of old accounts and legends concerning magic. Usually these tales are related to natural calamities, such as the advent of new and unknown diseases, or particular and adverse climates that arrived throughout the year and close to the grape harvest. Cesare Pavese, too, in his book "La luna e i falò," described the magical rite of fire to drive away the "masche" in the days before the harvest, describing it as the most magical time of the year. We dedicated this vineyard to magic, rediscovering an old tale found in the 1980s when two anthropomorphic stones were found at the head of a row of an old vigna, known as a "camongin" on Vesime hill, the last survivors of twenty-four sculpted la coppia that marked the vineyard landscape. It is possible that the stone vigna was created to counter the drama of phylloxera, a disease that destroyed European viticulture in the early 1900s. Magical thinking represents a system of oral knowledge designed to interpret the world and combat daily challenges. Talismans, stones, spells, and prayers are expressions of the culture of a community that sought solutions, even transcendent ones, to cope with calamities, to divert destiny toward serenity, to fight evil. Thanks to its twelve stones, it is also magical...We do not explain how, but the wine that is born is better.
