Bodega Numanthia was the first winery to venture into the Toro Designation of Origin in Castile and Leon in the late 1990s and reveal its potential. The estate's name was inspired by the village of Numancia, whose brave inhabitants, after a long siege in 134 B.C., preferred to die than surrender to the Romans. The same resilience can be found in Toro's vineyards, which have withstood phylloxera and the usual extreme weather conditions. The estate has an extraordinary heritage of some of the oldest vines on Earth: they are 50 to 200 years old, free-standing and bush-trained, with very low yields. The small, very thick-skinned berries produce extremely concentrated wines with firm but round tannins.
