Etna Rosso "Dea Vulcano" from the famous Sicilian winery Donnafugata is a fragrant, fresh and fruity red, with a pleasantly simple and immediate character. It is a young wine, to be savored on the fruit, to capture all the aromatic richness of excellent quality grapes. It is the ideal bottle to approach the complex world of Etna wines and to begin to know their fundamental characteristics. Donnafugata owns estates in the most prestigious areas of Sicily and manages a 35-hectare property on Etna, with Montelaguardia, Statella, Camporè and Calderara in the municipality of Randazzo, Marchesa and Verzella in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia in force in six different districts. Faithful to the traditions of the area, he cultivates the classic varieties of Etna: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante.
"Dea Vulcano" is an Etna Rosso by Donnafugata produced with Nerello Mascale-se grapes and a small part of Nerello Cappuccio, which come from various vineyards planted with saplings, located on the northern slope of Etna, between Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia at an altitude between 700 and 750 meters above sea level. The soils are of lava origin, rather deep and rich in minerals, with a loose and sandy texture. The climate is cool, with considerable temperature variations, both between the seasons and between day and night temperatures. The harvest takes place in the first half of October, with the manual picking of the best bunches, which are then further selected on the vibrating table before vinification. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 25 °C, with a short maceration on the skins for about 8-10 days. The wine ages for 14 months in concrete vats and partly in second and third passage French oak barriques, to then complete the refinement with 10 months in the bottle.
Donnafugata's Etna Rosso "Dea Vulcano" is the pure and direct expression of the great wines of Etna, in its most youthful and simple, agile and flowing version. It has a light, bright and almost transparent ruby ​​red color in the glass. The bouquet is characterized by refined and elegant aromas reminiscent of red currants, morello cherries, raspberries, wild strawberries, floral nuances and aromatic herbs of the Mediterranean scrub. On the palate it denotes a medium structure, with a fine and delicate tannic texture, a crunchy and ripe sip, which accompanies towards a harmonious, fresh and savory finish.
