Orto di Venezia in Sant'Erasmo is one of the very few wineries where wine is produced in Venice, created by the genius of French entrepreneur Michel Thoulouze, who has revived one of the best "vegetable gardens" of the ancient Serenissima.
Orto di Venezia is located in a charming farmhouse on the Island of Sant'Erasmo, from which it enjoys superb views of the Lagoon, purchased, after falling in love with the place by chance, by Michel Thoulouze.
Today some 15,000 bottles of Orto wine are produced there annually, which can be found in Venice, of course, but also in the world's best restaurants: it was the only Italian wine, off the list, chosen, for example, at Alain Ducasse's Parisian restaurant at the Hotel Plaza Athénée.
Orto was born thanks to a unique terroir, but it is made, above all, by a great man: Monsieur Thoulouze, who, in the late 1990s during a tour of the Laguna while waiting for a late flight, was struck by an old farmhouse with a splendid view, and it was immediately love.
After buying it, intrigued by local farmers who told him how the land around it was the best in Venice, where there were already many vineyards in the 16th century, he invites his friends Lydia and Claude Bourguignon, agronomists from Romanée Conti in borgogna (famous for being the world's most precious wine to boot) and Alain Graillot, wine producer guru from Crozes-Ermitage, for advice.
With their help, he began a long process of redeveloping the soils, which were prepared with barley, radish, oats and Chinese root without ever giving a plow stroke, so as not to compromise the delicate surface layer of the earth rich in precious elements, and employing only ancient natural manual methods without using any fertilizer or herbicide.
